Grand Magus IRON WILL track by track with vocalist JB
Grand Magus are around in the Stoner Rock / Doom / Metal swamps for more than ten years. With IRON WILL they easily win this month’s soundcheck. Vocalist JB pins down a track by track analysis.
Nine songs, nine catchy tunes, nine times traditional Metal with retro und slight Doom influences.
Vocalist JB breaks down an analysis for every single tune!
‘Like The Oar Strikes The Water’
This was the first song we worked on for IRON WILL. The main riff was created in 2006 and was recorded very primitively on a ghetto blaster in our old rehearsal space.
Both me and Fox knew that this was the embryo for a great song so we kept working on it. It wasn’t until Seb joined the band, that we could finish the song.
‘Fear Is The Key’
This is a pretty uncharacteristic riff for Grand Magus. Quite fast and groovy. I always started to play it when we were rehearsing and everytime it put a smile on our faces, but we had no idea where to go from the main riff into the verse.
We were almost convinced that we couldn’t use it, but then things fell into place and it came out really good in the end, with a catchy chorus.
‘Hövding’
This is Fox’s creation; he’s always been good at this kind of moody melodies that convey a sense of power. I convinced him that we should use it as an intro/segue kind of thing on the album. I think it sets the feeling for the title track that follows.
‘Iron Will’
I had this riff and when we played it together, I knew that it was going to be called ‘Iron Will’ and that it would be the title of the album as well.
I think this is one of the most powerful songs we have ever done, and it’s my personal favorite on the album. This is mostly because it made things very clear to me what the album was going to sound like and what direction the music and lyrics would go in.
‘Silver Into Steel’
Probably, the most emotional song on the album. It’s got a strong melancholic yet powerful vibe to it. The subject matter is also very special to me personally, but I will not reveal the true nature of what it means. He who seeks shall find!
‘The Shadow Knows’
This is Heavy Metal. No matter what you do, the shadow knows…
‘Self Deceiver’
I’ve met many such people in my lifetime. I guess we all fool ourselves sometimes, but it’s a dangerous place to end up in. Every person needs to search within and ask “is this who I am?”. People playing a role are seldom to be trusted.
‘Beyond Good And Evil’
Already, a favorite track to play live. It kind of plays itself. Also one of the first songs finished for the album. Our goal is to write as memorable songs as possible and I think you get into this track the very first time you hear it.
‘I Am The North’
An homage and dedication to the true ruler of the north and the smell of freedom and nature that I always carry within myself. If you ever get the chance to visit the north of Sweden, Norway or Finland, you will know what I mean.
